My husband and I both love to be smooth all over - as many of you do, too. We have two daughters (10 and 12) and a son (16). I was just wondering, what do you think is an appropriate age for teenage kids to start body shaving? Our son e.g. shaves his entire legs and armpits. I think if that's what he wants it's ok. He is a high school soccer player and says he feels more comfortable with smooth legs. Our youngest daughter recently asked me to let her shave her legs. I think it's too early. What do you think?

in years gone by, the native americans would pluck out the hairs as they grew in. (at least my tribe did) It really depends on what you and your daughter is comfortable with.

I had a friend when I was 16 who was a swimmer. He shaved his entire body, as did most other swimmers. So shaving for sports is not unusual. As far as your daughter, I'm no dermatologist, but IMHO 10 and 12 is too young to shave. The hair is probably not developped enough to shave and could cause skin issues. Maybe 14? I'll let a lady give her opinion here.
On a side note, a french nudist told me about an apparently growing trend in Europe. Teen smoothies. 13, 14 year old kids who are already shaving their pubes. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but that just seems crazy.

If a youngster is inquiring about shaving legs, she is uncomfortable with the way she is. Adolescence is a rough time for youngsters. Whatever you can do to ease their apprehension of their changing bodies would be good. Ten might be a big young, maybe by 11 or 12. Is your Ten year old trying to imitate her family members to be just like them?
I wish you well, Cheri

Thank you for your answer. I am from Germany and from what I've heard it's not so unusual for kids at that age to shave their pubes. Age 13 or 14 seems to be quite normal now.

As I mentioned in my last post, I am from Germany, but I've spent a year in the U.S. as an exchange student and I've visited the U.S. 10 times for holiday. What I'm trying to say is, please correct me when I'm making a mistake, ok?

Hi Sharon, I'm in Italy and here I've seen quite a few teenagers who are shaved. More boys with shaved chests, legs and armpits and even quite a few with shaved pubes. I've also seen quite a few girls with shaved pubes. Since I shave almost everything, it's nice to see others getting the idea too.

As many of us have observed , shaving or trimming the pubic area is becoming more the norm.

Not exactly sure when my wife allowed our daughters, as teenagers, to start shaving their legs. I know it was when they started to ask and said that many of their friends had already started to shave.
I'm sure it was in their junior high school years which was somewhere around 7th grade and around 12 years old.

Needless to say I think it is up to the individual lad or lass to decide when and what they want to do.
Our two daughters were nude from the time they were born, and they just loved it.
We let them do their own "thing". The two of them were completely opposite.
I can remember the first year they came home from college, and we headed to DS for "Spring Break" yes that is right, "Spring Break", my wife and I could not believe what had happened over the months.
One decided to have piercings and be "shaved", and the other daughter did not change.
I guess it is all in what they want to do. As long as they are happy and content with themselves, who is to decide.
They are great young women now, and both will be married in the coming months.
Ouch!!! There goes my wallet.

Kids are maturing at a quicker rate these days. When I was 10 years old my leg hairs were long and dark, so I wanted to shave them. My family said 'no.' I was finally allowed when I was 11. With me, it looked like I needed to shave at an earlier age than normal. Look at your daughter's legs- is the hair on them still light and little-kid-like or is she starting to get the longer/ darker/ more mature leg hair. She may be ready at age 10 or she may just want to be like siblings or friends.

Melissastarr, great to see you on again!
My ex let our daughter start shaving when she was 11. She started shaving everything else around 13-14. She has an unfortunate talent for growing thick dark back and body hair which drives her crazy
My son (age 5) looks to be following the same course of dark corse hairs, but guys can get away with it easier :)

The problem with shaving, is that once you start..........
Let the kids do what they want. Better than doing drugs or other things they shouldn't be doing, no?

An addendum to my earlier post - I finally got to the beach for the first time this year last Sunday and I have to say that the percentage of males who shave all or most of their body hair has gone way up just since last summer. This means about 60-70% with shaved armpits (and often arms) and chests and about 50% with shaved legs. Trimmed genital areas were about 80% it seems. I'm a terrible judge of teenagers age, but I'd say that even 12-14 year olds are now shaving both underarms and pubic areas. On the other hand, I saw only one woman with armpit hair (an old tradition here in Italy) and all the others, as is now normal, with virtually all other hair removed. A high percentage with shaved or trimmed genital hair as with the men. I did this 'investigation' so I could report back in this forum. Final conclusion: Body shaving is becoming universal amongst Italians in any age group.

Maturation to puberty is a highly individual question. My Wife grew hair and breasts at age 10, while most other girls were rather later.
It appears that the critical question is largely one of body mass, with hormones turning on at about 100 pounds. I can remember a girl in my HS who appeared to be 9 YO at age 17, but she was also so small that she stood only about 4 Ft Five inches.
I think that the question is not just to be determined by birthdays on the calender.

Sorry to take the thread on a very slight tangent, but I'd appreciate some input from the other parents on this board, and this topic is so relevant it didn't seem worth starting a new thread. The parenting boards that my wife and I frequent tend to be very unhelpful the moment nudism is mentioned!
My family (me, my wife, our 12yo daughter & 9yo son) are what I call "holiday nudists". We take occasional nudity for granted at home but we're not the sort to engage in organised social nudity. My wife and I both work full-time, so we try to use our summer holiday to isolate the family unit from the world for a while, just relaxing together in a secluded villa somewhere hot. Lounging around naked for two weeks is the accepted custom; stress levels in the grownups instantly plummet, and the kids are basically the same happy little nudists they were as toddlers. We dutifully remind them of the options every year, but even now they're unwilling to wear a stitch from day 1 to day 14.
Last year, our daughter was a little shy about the beginnings of her pubic hair, and finally started to use her first leg razor a few weeks ago. Today while changing together, my wife was a little taken aback to notice that our daughter's razor has wandered, and that her pubic hair has now gone too.
As young parents blessed with responsible children, we try to be forward-thinking on matters such as this. Our daughter's body is hers to do with as she pleases, and since shaving preferences are harmless and non-permanent, enforcing a tattoo-level veto seems excessive. Nevertheless, we're concerned - 12 sounds absurdly young to be hacking away down there, and although she's been taught how to shave her legs safely, the instruction stopped there. My wife is also worried that she now looks much less physically mature than before, and might need to have that explained to her. We're curious as to where she even got the idea - my wife and I are cropped, but we're certainly not "smooth"!
We're due to head off on this year's holiday shortly, and often use it as an appropriate setting for "birds and bees"-type chats (two weeks of relaxed nudity makes everything much easier than my dad's strategy of a stiff gin and a pop-up book). Since the new haircut will probably get its official unveiling while we're there, it's a good venue to sit her down. We're undecided about our approach, and would be grateful for the thoughts of other parents.
Is it even appropriate for us to express an opinion? Would it be better to politely overlook it? Are the concerns listed appropriate to be shared with her? (God forbid, have we overlooked any?) Any suggestions on how this might be tackled with a minimum of embarrassment?
Sincerest thanks in advance!
