Is it appropriate or rather do you think people will mind if i am naked on a public beach. It is part of the city and there are a few people there usually. Do you think it would be ok to be nude there?

First find out the local laws then obey them. If the local laws are against public nudity as indecent exposure then you obey the laws. To go out to a public beach that isn't designated as being a nude beach puts you at risk of not only being arrested for indecent exposure, but also to be charged with a sex crime and you could possibly have to register with the police where ever you live as a sex offender.

We the willing who are led by the unknown must do the impossible for the ungrateful.

In addition to possibly getting you a criminal record, "in your face" nudism can hurt the cause. Getting people upset who never thought of outlawing it.

There is a huge amount of information and first hand experience here to give you directions to a place where you can be nude without breaking the law or where nudity is at least tolerated.

Skip trying to be nude on a public textile beach.

In parts of Europe it isn't a problem if you choose somewhere reasonably quiet. For example, last week in Spain I was on a quiet textile beach when a couple walking along wearing swimwear removed it on seeing that I was nude. The big advantage of being on a textile beach is that the voyeurs are absent. It is a shame, but that is why we sometimes prefer textile beaches. A couple, one male, one female, attracts little attention even if only one of them is nude, so I prefer to be with my partner. Incidentally, nudity in Spain is legal anywhere, although most people do not know that. Sexual exhibitionism is of course, banned.

I seen this old post and thought of Tim's post as something we greatly need in the USA, where even if you are on a textile beach it is OK to get nude if you act appropriate, what a simple concept for us in America.

i agree with everyone else, you can get in a lot trouble for tanning in public nude. i go to a local beach, but i go up into the dunes where i can't be seen by the family beach goers. i get my tan and relaxation, but if seen and reported, i can still be arrested!!!

as much as i love to push the envelope, i agree with the consensus here....don't do something that'll only get you in trouble in the end.

gatorman some places you would be in more trouble just being in the dunes than for nude sunbathing. I just believe that the government should wake up and relize that as taxpayers nudist have rights to.

An excellent point, Bob.
Have you written to your local, state or federal representative lately to lobby for designated nude beaches? Since we are the government ("..of the people, by the people.."), it falls to us to make our voices heard by those we have chosen to represent us in the daily activities of our governance. I try to tweak an elected official about once a month: sometimes state, sometimes local, just to spread the wealth. I recognize that it will take some time, and perhaps some economic pressure; but without the effort these things will not happen on their own.

Let's say I have found a spot on a local river that would be a perfect place for naturists. In the spirit of "think global, act local", I was wondering if AANR or somebody has some sample materials and checklists that would help me approach community leaders.

I am imagining some sort of "kit" with a checklist of potentially key people to contact, suggested talking points for first contact, maybe sample letters or even speeches with key phrases that have the right tone. For instance, I'd probably have to organize a small committee and get at least one "known" local leader at least to say they weren't against the idea. The kit could give me some tips for doing this. It would also be helpful to know some cases where communities have ok'ed naturist use, and if possible some way to contact naturists who have been through the process.

It seems to me that it would be incredibly daunting for someone to try to invent all this by themselves, but with a standard approach, successful initiatives might grow exponentially by being able to learn from each other and point to each other's success. There are "dummies" guides for absolutely everything -- why not a Getting-Your-Kit-Off Kit?

A gentle reminder from personal experience. Going nude on a public beach can indeed get you arrested. People with cell phones will only be too happy to call in. This will result in one night in jail, bail, and appearance before a judge, and incumbent fine, or worse.

I recall seeing a episode on the Travel Channel talking about the top 10 beaches of Florida. They specifically mentioned South Beach in Miami as having a European influence and showed many blurred pics of topfree women. On another beach they mentioned the feeling seclusion and being alone and showed a woman taking off and later putting back on her top. In these situations, isolated streatches of beach where topfree sunbathing is the norm I think you may be able to get away with it. However you must always be prepared to pay the piper should you run into t a over-zealous ranger.

I don't know if I shared this story here before, but please "bare" with me if I did.

About ten years ago I went to a local beach on the off-season. The weather that day was reasonably warm, but I was the only person around. It was not a clothing-optional beach, but due to the solitude that day, I took my top off and laid back to sun wearing only bikini bottoms. At one point a police helicopter flew over on a routine patrol, but I thought nothing of it. Then about 5 minutes later a police SUV rolled up to my location and the cop got out, asking me to put my top back on. I complied of course, but then he asked for my ID and proceeded to write me a ticket for "public nudity". I meekly signed the ticket and the cop went on his way.

When I appeared two week later to pay my fine, I was told that they had no record of the offense, suggesting that the officer hadn't filed it yet. They told me to call back in two more weeks. I did so, and the ticket still had not been filed. At that point I decided to forget about it and have had no repercussions since.

I guess it's possible that the officer decided that it was a "bad ticket" since no one had filed a complaint over my topless sunning. I likely could have fought it and won. As it is, I filed the ticket in my nudist's scrapbook as a memento.

Come to think of it, I probably have shared this story here before, but it still serves as a reminder to watch what you do on textile beaches and to save the nudity for clothing-optional environments unless you're prepared to take your case to court.

Annie

I guess I lucked out in my public beach experience. About two summers ago, before I jumped into true naturism, I went to a state park on Lake Michigan...Michigan's west coast. I picked a tall dune with no one, seemingly, around. I stripped down, laid on my blanket and put on lotion. After enjoying the warmth of the sun for about 30 minutes, along comes a jogger-hiker. We both apologised! The hiker kept going and I got dressed and left...before anyone else(like a ranger)happened to come along. That is when I decided to try to find a good nusist resort. There are no legal nude beaches in Michigan. IF there are, please let me know!!
