Let me start this by saying that St Maarten is a wonderful Island. My first encounter with Orient Beach was "unsavory", It was fairly easy to find, easy parking. Upon approachng the beach you can either go over to the bar or walk to the right and come across this sign that warns you that you may encounter nude people. I thought to myself, it cant hurt to just walk a bit and see what all the hoo ha is all about. This place must be world known because it was very populated. Young, old, children, skinny, obese, and just plain folks. As I ventured a few yards down the beach I became very uncomfortable, like I was being scrutinized. I looked at my friends and they also looked a bit unnerved! We turned and left.... That evening though I had the oportunity to chat with a few folks down at a local seafood place. They were with a christian group and were touring the islands and visiting the churches where they sang gospel. Come to find out they are "regulars" at Orient Beach when they come to St Maartin!! I have to admit I was a bit shocked! I discussed with them my discomfort with my visit. They explained to me part of my discomfort may have been from "standing out" as we were fully clothed, Jeans, shirts, shoes, hats etc. That was probably why folks were staring, we just looked out of place. Add to that the obvious discomfort we were feeling and I suppose we really stood out. They invited our group to join them at Orient Beach the next day. They were the NICEST people. We arrived about noon and stayed till about 3. We rented a few chairs, our friends were nude however we had trunks and towels. I just couldnt quite get the nerve to dis-robe. My friends explained about their philosphy and how they were into "naturism" They also showed us how for the first 100 yards or so you may encounter nudist who are there mainly to "be seen" The more "true naturist" are closer to Club O. Some people had a radio plaing, but no wild dancing. I have to say, it was very enlightening. No one was out of line, everyone seemed very respectful of each others space. Most were nude however a percentage wore suits, no problem. The views were fantastic, there are little islands in the distance. The water is crystal clear and warm. I would recommend this beach to anyone.... Mark

Did you hear anything while you were there about the huge controversy with Disney and Orient Beach policys? It could be really bad for Nudists in ANY tourist area.

Mark,
I'm so glad to hear you've had such a positive experience there! Your chance encounter with that gospel group sounds like just what you needed to give it a chance. I know you've had a hard time believing us when we tell you that it's not about sex. Now, I hope you believe us!
Maybe it's time to check out the clubs in the Boston area?

Hi Mark,
I am very surprised to see your post. I did not think your were open minded at all from your first posts and here you visited Orient Beach and actually found that people are completely normal. What ever you see walking down main street you will find walking down a nude beach, except a lot of cloths.
Try it next time and you will really be hooked.
Peace in Christ, Hans

Its nice to know that you have seen that we are just a group of normal people who really prefer not to have to wear clothing. Now if you really want to broaden your horizon mark, you need to join a nudist club/resort and experience social nudity. Just remember before you leave to go home that you have to put your clothing on again. Quiet a few new memebers at our club tend to forget that when they are leaving.

Wife and I are planning on visiting St. Maarten and I definitely want to visit the "Orient Beach". For the Novice visitor, which side of the beach should I first visit. As I understand, there is a resort side dedicated to the French clintele. Really, excited about the opportunity to tan and mix but not upset our European TANS.

I can't believe that we have visited Club Orient and Orient Beach on St. Marten twice since my last post.
Sloboy,
St. Maarten is divided into two sides, the French side and Dutch side. If you blink, you'll miss the signs stating you've entered one side and left the other. There are some differences but they really are so small that it's hard to tell. All in all it's a great place to vacation and Orient Beach and Club Orient are our favorite nudist destinations so far.
Orient Beach is all clothing optional but you will encounter a larger percentage of nude people on the south end of the beach...the Club Orient side of Orient Beach. You may see several topless females, many that are wearing very small bottoms and a few nude sunbathers once in a while at either beach places along the beach. Coco Beach or Mr. Vernon both now have nude sunbathing areas on their section of the beach and there are several couples, singles sunbathing nude there.
When you are comfortable with nudity and are ready to go all out...head south to Club Orient's section of Orient Beach and join the other 200+ nudists that inhabit this section of the beach. Go into Papagayo's restaurant and have lunch or a snack and maybe a drink in the nude. Or you can sit at a table on the deck of the Perch Bar...also part of Club Orient and enjoy happy hour with about 50 or so other nude happy hour participants.
It's a place we highly recommend.

Dear Prof: We are in the process of trying to secure a week, next month, in St. Maarten and I definitely want to spend a day or two at Orient Beach. We previously visited while we were on a cruise so we were limited to a couple of hours. Silly question? How do you arrange to pay for food and beverages at the various Orient Beach establishments. Won't be staying at the resort so I don't know where I'd keep my credit card while I'm at the beach. I'm not being funny so that's why I'm asking. Noticed a lot of people enjoying themselves eating and drinking and I want to know in advance so I enjoy an "au naturale" day there.
Any information or suggestions will be appreciated.

Sloboy,
When staying at Club O, after check in, we go to the various places we are going to make purchases and give them our credit card. They make up a card with your name on it at L'Orientique (the store), Papagayo's, the Perch Bar and Dolphin Water Sports.
After that we lock our valuables in the room safe and hardly ever get anything else out.
Since you are not staying there at Club O, I might suggest you purchase a wrist wallet from either TNS or AANR. They are very handy and hold either money, credit card and a key or two. The velcro keeps it on you wrist or ankle. Easy to put on and take off when sunning or walking to either place to get a cool one. I have a couple of these and my wife and I will take turns wearing it when we venture down the beach to another place for drinks and need money or credit cards. We usually just wear a sarong and they don't make any of those with pockets....yet!

Sloboy,
If you aren't able to purchase one of these before you get to Orient Beach, go into L'Orientique (the store) at Club O, they have them for sale. They also have a couple of different types you wear around your neck, one waterproof and another that isn't but just as handy.
Have a great trip...wish we were going too!
