We've been to a few resorts, a few clubs and to many nude beaches. In our travels, I would have to say that the vast majority of those in all places was non-smoking.
We are social drinkers as well. Those we hang around with are also social drinkers. I'd also have to say that the vast majority of those we've seen at clubs, resorts and beaches are non-drinkers also.
I don't smoke cigarettes. I'm a cigar smoker and only a 1-4 cigars a month. I used to smoke more often but it seems to affect my asthma problem so I've cut back.

There are very few smokers (3 at most) in my nonlanded club, and they are polite and will go outside to take a puff. Most of my club members are social drinkers. I'm actually allergic (asthma) to the cigatrette or cigar smoke and have been known to leave an upscale restaurant because of it...in the nonsmoking areas.
What I dislike is one park in the southeast...you have to walk through a cloud of smokers to get to the nonsmoking area of the clubhouse. I think they did that backwards.

My experience is a little different from FireProf's. In my one visit to Terra Cotta a few years ago, I recall being rather put off by all the second hand smoke I absorbed. Maybe things have changed since then. When we were at Eden Bay in 2004, I'd say at least a third of the guests were smokers, but the island breezes (and the courtesy of most of the smokers) prevented it from becoming a problem.
As for drinking, It seems to me that few nekkid people are teetotalers, nor are there large numbers of heavy drinkers. The amount of drinking varies wildly from one place to the next. Some of the bigger, 'hipper' places in the Caribbean seem to promote a party-til-you-puke atmosphere. Others are considerably more laid-back.

At the resort I recently visited, smoking is permitted in the pool area. I even saw a few people smoking while dangling their legs in the pool. Fortunately, smoking is not permitted in the rec hall and hot tub area. I happen to enjoy alcoholic beverages but I had little interest in drinking while nude. Overall, I found that nudity enabled me to be much more concerned about my health.

Here in Texas, I've seen more smokers than non-smokers at landed clubs. Most of the clubs prohibit smoking inside their clubhouse, or while in the pool. But they do allow smoking when sunning around the pool.
At the club where I'm a member, people drink Iced Tea or Water during club meals. At the Dances and Karaoke nights, probably 40-50% are social drinkers. Beer cans have to be covered in a koozie (and glass bottles aren't allowed in the common areas). It's pretty easy to tell when someone is drinking bottled water, but harder to tell what's in a mug or koozie.

Well, a research done by the Department of Psychiatry at the University Medical School of Lubeck, Germany conclusively showed that alcoholics experience erectile dysfunction problems much more often than non regular drinkers. Ouch! cider beer

I'm Irish, so of course I drink. I think my blood contains at least a 50% mixture of Jameson and Guinness. Not a cigarette smoker, but I do smoke cigars, but not very often. I've actually smoked about 20 cigars this year, which is more than I have in the past 5 years combined. I usually only smoke them when I'm around friends though, or home alone, outside on my porch.

Quit smoking in 1975 or 76, started up again in 1985 for about 6 months...been smoke free since then. Quit drinking for about 8 years, during my first marriage. When I got divorced, I discovered I was not an alcoholic...I just love my beer.

With regards to the second hand smoke:
Our annual trip to TCI was a good one, not great but good. 1) one couple was missing in action/ too many family commitments. and 2) the amount of smoking was bordering on unbearable! One couple smoked a couple packs a cigs in the daily light hours that we were all sunning and trying to relax.
I have no problem with people that want to smoke. THE PROBLEM: they can NOT contain that smoke within their OWN space. That smoke is just as irritating to them as it is to us ... ever see a smoker inhale and keep the smoke inside their bodies??? They exhale it all over the place AND ... they feel they have the right to do so. They feel they have the right to expel toxic gases into the air for others to breath!
I've spoken to and written to TCI about their smoking policy and trying to designate a "smoking area" but TCI is small and it would be difficult to find a place where cig smoke would not find it's way onto the pool deck.
When we go to TCI for a week, with our friends, we always leave our doors open. We like the fresh air, we go in and out of each other's rooms for various things, drinks, mixers, snacks ... we could not do this this last time because our rooms were filling up with cigarette smoke! If there's a policy for NO SMOKING in the rooms, how do you keep the cigarette smoke smell outta rooms when you allow people who smoke ... to rent the rooms!?
Cigarette smoke knows no bounderies and most of those that smoke fail to see past their rights and how they infringe on those that do not.

Living Waters Spa is even smaller than TCI. It has a smoking area, but it is almost never used. That's one of the things I like about it!

I don't understand why TCI can't do the same. The idea's been put out there ... it's their decision to do with it as they please.
LWS was nice ... it's just that the male owner was not very nice to the Prof the second time there and made a point of making her feel stupid for asking a legitimate question. Doubt we'd return, she's not that enthused! LOL

I don't know why some people lump smoking and drinking together. Smoking shortens your life, on average. Drinking lengthens life for an average person. Smoking disturbs other people with smoke, stink, and ashes. Drinking disturbs nobody but the drinker. Moderate wine drinkers live about 25% longer than non-drinkers. Recent research has shown that even heavy drinkers live somewhat longer than non-drinkers. Since learning those statistics I've been a moderate wine drinker. I've come to enjoy a glass or two of wine with dinner every night.

A major 20 years study by the Universities of Texas and Stanford found that heavy drinkers outlived non-drinkers. Moderate drinkers lived longest, but 2/3 of the non-drinkers died before the end of their study.

Car crash data from 2010 shows that 31% of fatal car crashes are "alcohol related." That means the other 69% of fatal car crashes are sobriety related. Maybe our society ought to outlaw sober driving, the apparent cause of most fatal crashes.

Good one, Bob.
Fire, that's disheartening to hear about TCI; we were planning a visit, but if cig. smoke is a problem we may reconsider. I'd much rather smell pot smoke than tobacco.
