There is an essay by a nudist in the My Turn section of the national magazine Newsweek this week. Here is the link

Thanks for the link! First impression is that a big media opportunity was missed. I'm sure Mr. Denker is a wonderful person, but wasn't someone a little more trendy available for such a bright media spotlight? I think if I were an average Newsweek reader, I'd be left with the impression that nudists are old guys who still lust after Sophia Loren, have wives that aren't nudist, who don't know how to spell "naturalist" and who read poetry while nude in New York restaurants. Also, would you be tempted to go to a beach that seems to need so much policing, let alone consider going there as a family?

An alternative might have been an article by a couple (or celebrity mom) describing the joys of clothing-optional family summer holidays. Personally, I am kind of allergic to accenting "nudist lifestyle" -- I am convinced that the initial public message should instead emphasize that no-clothes is often just a healthy, logical fashion choice when doing the usual things people do, like swimming or going to the beach.

Agde...

Point well taken. But these are essays submitted by readers, not stories by the press. The fact that Newsweek ran this at all strikes me as a major step forward. When was the last time that a nudist got the equivalent of an Op-Ed piece in a national publication?

One response would be for those families and celebrity moms that you mention send letters to the editor amplifying on the essay.

If you read some of the posts on the Gunnison thread you would understand what he means. The National Park Service is strained already, we DO NOT want to risk losing this beach.
