New book ‘Meals Worth Stopping For’ features Bare Buns Café

Bare Buns Café at Lake Como Family Nudist Resort is spotlighted in a new book called “Meals Worth Stopping For: Florida – Local Restaurants within 10 Miles of the Interstate” by Nancy Barber and Jane Bolding, who call themselves “The Gourmettes.”

The café is featured on pages 130-131, under the header, “Dare to Go Bare!”

“You don’t have to be naked to eat at the Bare Buns, but you might wish you were after the initial shock wears off,” the authors write in their just published paperback guide.

A portion of the review dwells on the “bare” facts, giving a brief history of Lake Como Family Nudist Resort as well as their reactions.

“Everyone we saw at Lake Como was tan, and lots of them were working on their all-over tans by the pool while we ate lunch,” they write.

Regarding the food, they observed: “The menu is extensive, including burgers, sandwiches, salads, thin- or thick-crust pizza, homemade lasagna, liver and onions, Salisbury steak, eggplant parmesan, and roast turkey and the usual suspects in appetizers: wings, mozzarella sticks, etc. They even offer homemade soups and pies.”
Overall, the Gourmettes describe the food as “decent.”

“Nudists, as one would guess, come in all shapes and sizes and ages, although the folks we saw seemed to be over 30 with many over 60.

The great thing about lunch here for non-nudists is that it forces you to confront culturally constructed ideas about ‘what’s proper where’ when it comes to the body.

We’ve seen how conventional ideas have shifted over the years as people show more and more of their bodies in public without repercussion. Perhaps nudists are just ahead of their time.

They’ve been coming here since the 1940s. It’s a side of Florida that most tourists don’t see,” they write in the two-page spread.

Other Bay area restaurants reviewed include The Jerk Hut Island Grille & Mojito Bar on East Fowler Avenue in Tampa, Mel’s Hot Dogs at East Busch Boulevard, also in Tampa, and Showtown Restaurant & Lounge on US 41 South in Gibsonton.

In addition to reviews, the Gourmettes include easy-to-follow directions and cross-referenced indexes.

The publisher, Globe Pequot, describes the book as “User-friendly and fun, with around 100 entries organized by interstate, this engagingly written book includes photos throughout conveying the character (and characters) of individual restaurants, as well as sidebars on everything from local recipes to Florida lore.”

According to Globe Pequot, Nancy Barber is a native Floridian and lifelong foodie who began her writing career at the West Orange Times weekly in the center of the state.

Currently she is a lecturer at Stetson University. Jane Bolding’s youth in Arkansas was marked by great home-cooking. She then spiced up her culinary education with a decade of eating and working in the restaurant industry in Manhattan.

Since the early 1990s, she has lived in Florida.

“Meals Worth Stopping For: Florida – Local Restaurants within 10 Miles of the Interstate” costs $14.95 available here for $11.66.
