The reason, I beleive, (I'm speculating here), for the biblical requirement of circumcision was for the purpose of cleanliness. Conditions in the place and time would seem to have made it practical, and I beleive that even though the people would have no way of knowing of the health benefits to them, God did.
As for the current day, even though it is rare, when the foreskin has been removed, there is zero incidence of penile cancer, because that's where it occurs. Also, the foreskin can sometimes harbor bacteria (if not kept properly cleaned) which can also, on rare occasion, promote cervical cancer in your partner. These tidbits are from a doctor friend of mine.
Finally, as to the female circumcision: Ladies, thank God you live in America! I've read about this. This truly is a barbaric mutilation. It is done in some areas of Africa to girls at the age of 5 or 6. The girls are taught from a very early age that this is to please their husbands. It is horribly painfull but they beg to have it done, so they can be "good wives." They remove the labia (I'm not sure if it is the Labia Minora, or the Labia Majora) to make them supposedly always feel like a virgin to their husband. It is done to them also because they consider their women property. Several years ago, there was a gentleman here in Minneapolis who's Visa had run out, and he tried very hard to get it renewed so he wouldn't be deported back to Africa. If sent back to his home, his daughter would have been forcibly mutilated this way. I'm not sure how it came out for him.
As for my (male)circumsision, I'm as sensitive I could be, and I'm happy with it-I'd never leave home without it.

I agree with you nudeisntlude, when we lived in Europe, most of the men were not circumcized. In the US and Canada most of the men I have seen have been circumcised. My hubby is circumcised and he says he has fantastic sensativity. My sons are circumcised, that was hubby's chice, he said he did that out of cleanliness. I have read that women have a higher incidence of cervical cancer that routinely have sex with uncircised men. Men that are not circumsized and are not fastideous in keeping the area under the foreskin clean have a high incidence of health problems.
As far as female circumcision, some societies feel that it is wrong for women to enjoy orgasms. It is mutilation of the female body, and as far as I am concerned, a crime. I am glad I live in Canada.

I have a friend (like me, in his 70's) who had never been circumcised. He developed penal cancer with the result that he had to have his penis totally amputated.
As a result I'm glad I was circumcised. I'd also note that my 15 year old grandson, like his father (my son) makes 3 generations who are & I think we are all glad. It's never interferred with sexual enjoyment for me or my son. As to the 15 year old, he often has erections and he says being circumcised doesn't bother him. Ha says a couple of his friends have pain when they get erections because the foreskin doesn't retract all the way and that he's happy this isn't the case with him or he'd be in pain a lot of the time.

The female circumcision mentioned by Kimberly occurs mainly in Africa and hte Middle East. I have seen a documentary on FGM. It's pretty extreme and archaic. Many international agencies such as UN's agencies are helping to change the practice of female circumcision.

I have seen documentaries like that too Irishred, its kind of hard to change society, especially when religeous practices are concerned. I am glad there are organizations that are fighting female mutilation.

The neat thing about diversity, even with regard to male circumcision, is that respectful curiosity can open doors. Exhibit A: The great discussion here!
IMHO, female circumcision is an abomination. I saw a documentary on it, and the film broke my heart.

Everyone: I'ts fantastic that the trend is to try to eliminate the practice of female circumcision!!!!!!!!!!!
theoldman: ouch! We could all do without having that amputation done at any age. I feel for your friend. I know that penile cancer is rare, and that radical surgical proceedure is rare too, but if you happen to be one of the victims, it's common enough!
I'm delighted that my parents had me circumcised. I'm happy with it. I wouldn't like to have it done as an adult, but I definately would if they hadn't had it done then. One more reason to say "Thanks Mom & Dad."

I have known older men that had the circumsion done when they got married. I never asked why, thought it was a private matter.

Kim,
My comment is that over the years being involved in family discussions as to why we circumcise(that is ,we in the USA),it is the females that don't want their sons to be different. So, I assume that when American women marry older men who are not "cut', their preference is to ask them to get circumcised.
The women in my family, mostly my daughters and daughter-in-laws, are strongly in favor of cutting ours boys.I'm not strongly against it (I'm cut and have no problems with lack of sensation),but when I suggest to them to leve it natural, they've all gone with circumcisn...appearance rather then (?).

You may have hit on something there chic. I do find a cut penis more asthetically pleasing than uncut. That is just my opion, we will have to have more in put from other females.

My wife's aunt said she was circumcised in the 1970's. Doctor removed some skin from her hood so she would have more sensitivity. A friend of mine had it done at age 56 because doctor told him to have it done after a physical. Didn't ask why we just stared, laughed and joked about his bandage.

Kim and Cheri
You both add a new slant to why women prefer circumcison. From my earlier notes you can see that I felt the main reason why the younger girls in my family prefered to have their sons cut, is because they did not want their boys to feel and look different among their peers.
You both add another demension when you say you prefer the look of a cut penis vs uncut.
I asked my wife the question in this light and she agreed with both of you. She feels an uncut penis is rather unatractive(her word was a bit stronger).
When I speak to the younger women in the family,I'll share the feed back.

I,like lovethesun, am not circumsized, and have the penis' head exposed sometimes, and sometimes not. I limit the exposure time in the sun, only to stop it from drying out. It is fun to put sunscreen on, but it has never burned anyway. Sensitivity? Well, I suppose I was more sensitive when younger, but I too have no problem being not circumsized. "we will have to have more in put from other females."
Hmm, I don't know I prefer uncut on men. They at least have the option of pulling it back if they want, circumcision is a little too drastic for me. I think natural is better, it's like saying you'd prefer only fake breasts. Let's just start putting the implants in when they're young. That's silly. My cousins have what I call the lipstick effect, small foreskins, and they can pull it back and you wouldn't know they hadn't been circumsized or they can leave it on and it covers all the way to the tip (you can't see any pink). If people want to circumsize their boys so much they should figure out how to get the "lipstick effect" and not go all the way, right away without the child having a say in it.
Then it leaves them the option when they are older of either getting it cut off or leaving it.
*chuckle* thanks to my cousin for the amazingly artistic avatar :)
