Here is an update on AANR, the American Association for Nude Recreation located in Kissimmee, Florida, from the desk of the President:
May 5, 2003 Dear AANR Clubs:
As we are all partners in our promotion and protection of nude recreation, I would like to share with you our proposal for a reorganization of AANR through a plan we have called "AANR Tomorrow."
Our goal is to streamline process without changing programs. In fact, we should be able to strengthen and enhance our programs through AANR Tomorrow to provide more professional and timely services to our members, and a more equitable system of democratic representation to members and clubs.
In nearly three-quarters of a century, AANR has developed from a loosely affiliated group of clubs and individuals to an organization working to represent nude recreation in public education, government relations, and business development. In the last decade, AANR has taken great strides in the use of professional support resources and technology to better advance opportunities for nude recreation and protect the gains made in the early days of AANR.
To build upon these successes, we now need to use the resources and technology available in the 21st century to fulfill the ultimate mission of AANR---to promote, enhance and protect nude recreation and nude living in the Americas.
The governing body under AANR Tomorrow will continue to be a Board of Trustees democratically elected to serve the interests of the members. Seven trustees will be elected by members in seven different geographic districts by mail or electronic ballot, one member, one vote. Seven trustees will be elected by AANR clubs, campgrounds and resorts.
A major goal of AANR Tomorrow is to provide professional, rather than volunteer, resources wherever possible. The programs that are so important to nude recreation---government affairs, public relations, membership and marketing, and youth---will all benefit from strong professional services provided through an expanded professional staff at the AANR office in Kissimmee, Florida. Where the Board or management perceive the need, special committees of volunteers may be appointed to accomplish specific tasks.
The marketing of a unified AANR will increase strength while reducing expenses associated with administration and travel.
Celebrations around the country will provide more opportunities for our members to truly enjoy the fun of nude recreation, along with social events, instructive and recreational activities, and friendship.
Town hall meetings will be held at the 2003 regional conventions to further discuss the reorganization and answer questions. The plan itself will be presented as legislation at the AANR Convention at Cherokee Lodge in August and voted on by the General Assembly.
I truly believe that by taking this giant step into the 21st century we will strengthen nude recreation and greatly increase public awareness and acceptance, government protections, and services and fun for our members.
If you have any further questions concerning AANR Tomorrow please contact me through the AANR office.
Pat Brown AANR President
Thank You to Cheri for this contribution.

This AANR update is from the desk of Erich E. Schuttauf, J.D., Executive Director of the American Association for Nude Recreation:
Dear AANR Friends, As many of you know, today the Hillsborough County, Florida Board of County Commissioners held a vote on whether to place a question on the November ballot asking voters if they favor enacting a "public nudity law." The vote would not automatically change county law, but is meant to be a "straw poll" of how voters feel. (That's a bit misleading, because just asking "do you favor a ban on public nudity?" implies to the average voter that we're talking about people walking nude on main street rather than in their own back yards, clubs, and secluded / traditional nude beaches). Regrettably, by a 4 to 3 vote, the commissioners agreed to go ahead with the straw poll in November. It is interesting to note, that of the public citizenry who voiced their opinions about this proposal (about 30) only ONE spoke in favor of it --- and that was David Caton of the American Family Association who had pitched the idea to commissioners. For AANR's part, I offered oral testimony information with heavy emphasis on the legal problems with taking a vote before the county is sure it has sufficient data to constitutionally support such a law. AANR also presented kits to the commissioners that became part of the official record on this ordinance. These included our official position statement, and impressive sources demonstrating that nudists give back to their communities including The Wall St. Journal, Forbes, Woodall's Campground Management, and very compelling figures on the property taxes, sales taxes, etc. paid by - -, just to the north (our appreciation to this club for providing these important stats on short notice). I also want to personally thank the many AANR members---especially a delegation from Lake Como Club who provided great personal assistance to me and offered testimony---as well as the Florida Association for Nude Recreation, The Naturist Society, Tampa Area Naturists, South Florida Free Beaches, and a Christian Nudist organization who all joined to voice a "harmony of voices" in opposition to the vote. I also want to thank our public relations firm, YPB&R for some very hard work on short notice which helped get AANR's position on the vote into print and on radio. Your member dues make their work possible, so I want to be sure to thank those of you reading this, for your membership support. At this time, it appears that most of the government, staff, even the press see this issue as a mainly an adult entertainment question. Citizens wish to see the same nude dancing clubs in Tampa close their doors. Predictably, a large contingent from the adult businesses were on hand, many of whom provided thoughtful insight and few whose boorish antics probably didn't work to anyone's good. Right now, this is bad news but there is some good news also. First, it's clear that our testimony made a difference. By the conclusion of the vote, enough commissioners had concerns with the constitutionality of the proposal and its underlying statistics that they are doing some "back peddling" to research it further--- even among proponents of the measure. Second, the three commissioners that voted "nay" voiced their opinions vehemently against it; your hard work had a hand in that. Finally, through a strong program of communications and work on our part in the months ahead, we may be able to sway voters against this yet. We appreciate your help in our efforts to promote, enhance, and protect nude recreation. We couldn't do it without you. We look forward to working with you in the months to come in Hillsborough.
Sun-cerely, Erich E. Schuttauf, J.D. Executive Director

This AANR update is from the office of the American Association for Nude Recreation:
Dear AANR clubs, officers, regional officers, members, and other friends of AANR
Today Reuters wire service broke a story about the growth of nude recreation and the American Association for Nude Recreation that our public relations firm Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown, and Russel has had in the works for several weeks. ( A brief note from reporter Jane Sutton---who prepared the piece---to our contact at YPBR as it went live was the only advance notice we had that it would run today.)
If you can believe it, the coverage on this story far exceeds the reach of the USA Today story we landed just last Friday! In addition to the impressive list below, the story has already prompted calls to us from ABC Television, CNBC and The Philadelphia Enquirer. Please join me in thanking Nancy Tiemann of Bare Necessities and Deb Petersen for providing some great material. Thanks, as always to Susan Weaver and Carolyn Hawkins of your PR Team.
Most of all, let me thank you for the support your clubs give us that made this one day "coup d' etat" of the airwaves for nude recreation possible. Frankly, it just doesn't get anymore mainstream than this:
ABC NEWS Network (radio and wire)
FORBES online (this marks the second time this year we've been recognized by this prestigious business journal)
USA TODAY (this is the THIRD time we've got mention within just ONE WEEK)
The Boston Globe
South Florida Sun-Sentinel - As a BUSINESS STORY
Reuters Wire Services (2nd article)
YAHOO NEWS (article 1) (article 2) (article 3)
Finally, as a follow up, you may be interested to learn that the USA Today piece from last week was re-created in the Arizona Business Journal.
