I've read about differences among different countries attitudes about nudism. Which countries are the most nudist-friendly? Which are the least? And what makes a country more accepting or unaccepting?

Cultural influence certainly makes a difference in being accepting or unaccepting of naturism. Countries that are naturist friendly would be France, Croatia, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and some other central european countries. I would imagine that the Islamic countries of the middle east would top the list of least friendly.

Your right goodegg, Europe is definately naturist freendly. We lived in Germany for a while an traveled to other countries in Europe. Nudity in Europe was common place and no one seemed to give it a second thought. Islamic contries are definately against naturism, especially when it comes to women.

I like the sauna-culture of scandinavia, personally, particularly Finnland.
In Mediterranean countries, most of the nudism is at the beaches, but I think toplessness still far outweighs full-nudity.
I think there's more prudishness in East European countries.
Leaving Europe, the Japanese have historically been very accepting of nudity at the public baths and hot-springs. However, after WWII, during the American occupation, the Americans segregated the baths (by gender). In recent years, there's been a decline in the use of the public baths, and even though segregation is no longer enforced by law, many facilities still segregate.
In Latin America, it varies from the rather prudish Mexicans to the very 'loose' Brazilians. For the most part, however, nudism is generally restricted to certain resort beaches. Personally, I'd like to visit Belize sometime. They have very open attitudes about nudity at the beaches... and they have some of the best beaches in the world.

Kim, I have found both Germany and Switzerland to be really open about nudism. I guess Europe in general is more open to nudism. You even see it on their outdoor advertisements.

Greg,
I too like the sauna-culture in Finland but perhaps I am biased. Although Finns regard nudity in the sauna and even swimming nude in a lake or sea afterwards as natural, there are not too many organized naturists in Finland. Perhaps we've taken too much cultural influence from the USA and we have become prudish in environments other than the sauna context. The Swedes and Danes are more casual towards nudity on beaches, etc. However having said that, Finns are not anywhere near as prudish as the Americans have become.
My understanding is that East Europeans are not very prudish about nudity, less so than the Finns, though I have not personally travelled to these countries.

I recall a story from the sixties, when a British Foreign Minister was visiting Japan. He saw some women bathing nude in a stream and asking his Japanese driver to stop, he got out and was watching them.
Seeing his driver was uncomfortable, he asked if being naked in public was considered indecent?
"No, but watching is!"
Cheers!

No one mentioned Greece!? Many of the Greek beaches I've visited were either topless (the popular main beaches) or clothing optional (outlying beaches away from main beaches). Gift shops with postcard stands out in the open had postcards showing both female and male genitals in a humorous way. One had a pair of glasses sitting on the flacid penis and a fake cigar tucked up under the penis making it look like a hairy big nose face. Another had a lady laying on her back with a green plastic toy soldier in a charging position facing the vaginal area creating the joke of "charging the bush". Even in some of the topless public beaches, some people could be seen removing all of their bathing suit without anyone saying anything to them.

I've been to a number of Asian countries years ago, At the time, it seemed that Thailand was a bit more lenient with nudism.

I think Australia is a naturist friendly country - there seemed to be a lot of naturist beaches to visit. England also to an extent is quite liberal in its approach to naturism - not as much as europe - i agree, but for instance the biggest selling newspaper has a topless model on page three everyday - now u wouldnt get that in the states - they went completly mad when Janet Jackson showed her nipple for 1 second!!

People in the US, by and large, equate nudity with sex, whether it is recreational nudity or procreational nudity. And Americans, by and large, are terrified of sex, hence the uproar over a moderately attractive woman showing a moderately attractive nipple. Of course, if everyone had a nipple, or perhaps even two, then maybe everyone would have said "Ho Hum" and gone back to their beer and guacamole. No, probably not.
So which country is the least accepting of nudity. My guess is the Vatican.

Skeptic, I'm not so sure about the Vatican, considering that the Pope, in his own book, stated that he used to swim nude when he was a young man. Also the fact that he has written that mere nudity is not immoral. It is only when the context of the nudity is immoral (such as pornography, illicit sex, etc.) that the nudity itself becomes immoral.

I agree with Seneca that there are other countries in the world (in particular in the Middle East and Asia) that are less friendly towards nudity than the Vatican. I remember we used to have a forum member from India telling us there was no nude beach in India.

Senica I think the Vatican would be more accepting of nudity than Islamic controlled countries.

I think Spain must lead Europe and the best nudist country. There a re 100's of official nude beaches and you have the right to go nude on any public beach without fear of arrest or trouble. A interesting thing is that unlike clubs the beaches are used mainly by younger people. Mixed beaches ie nude and textile are common and no one seems bothered.Which is why I opened my nudist complex here in Spain

nudepete, I was only in Spain for about a week. I was not on the southern coast. I didn't realize Spain had so many nude beaches.
