I don't think that being non-magnetic is the criteria since if you are wearing enough gold/silver jewelery it will also set off the alarms.
Out of curiosity, I asked an engineer friend about this. According to her, metal detectors work by creating a tiny electrical current in the metal you're trying to pinpoint. You can therefore detect any metal that conducts electricity, which is almost all of them, including gold, silver, steel, etc.
Airport detectors have a threshold setting so that very small objects don't activate them. That's why genital piercings and whatnot can get through.

It is possible to get fake piercings, which can be fun to elicit that sort of response. Especially if you are known for disliking piercings of any sort.

I take it you don't have any permanent piercings then.....? How do you feel about tattoos? Any differently?
