I am a college student looking to find more about nudism. I am writing an essay on nudism and it is required for me to complete an interview, asking some simple questions. Names are not necessary but if anyone could do this interview over email it would be very helpful. Thank you.

Great idea. Even better yet, jrnielso, this thread is all yours, so why not use it for the interview?
It doesn't sound like anything terribly private, so why not share your research by doing it online, right here in the open?
Once some readers see what you're doing, I'm willing to bet they'll contribute a lot more interaction this way.
In any case, whether you decide to do it in the open or not, it would be great if you'd post your finished essay in this thread at the end. I'm sure the members would appreciate it.

Hey jrnielso, my name is Travis, and I am a college student too and I would be happy to be interviewed. I am new to nudity my self (regular bases for the last month) but hung out in the nude quite a bit over the summer too. I can do the interviewing over this or over e-mail, AIM, or Yahoo/MSN.

-I started being nude around my house last year, so when I was 18. I was, of course, known to be nude every so often when I was young...before I was 5.
-I am not sure why...I guess I was just curious and enjoyed it and kept up with it.
-To be honest, I am not sure how I first learned about it. I first started being nude around the house or out in our grass fields and go skinny dipping. Because of where I live, out in the country of iowa or at college in wisconsin, there isn't much of a community.
-I think Cheri would be better at answering this one. I do not know of any nudist groups around here.
-Right now only my mom knows in my family. Unforchently, she did not seem to happy about the idea. her biggest concern was me getting into legal trouble and it did not sound like she would show any support. Other than my sister and my brother (he would probably be to young to understand), most of my family seems like they would not like that idea.
As for my friends, only my closest friends know. Out of 8 of my friends, 2 are uncomfortable with the subject (though i think i have one of them getting curious with the idea), 2 ( are indifferent to the subject but I know if I asked them, they would not be interested in going on a hike or playing cards or something nude. My roommates girlfriend is ok with nudity but only when it involves sex or art, other than that, she is uncomfortable with it. Another friend is ok being nude when having sex, but thats it, and her best friend (final friend of mine) is ok being nude by herself but other than with a few select friends, she does not like to be nude with others. As a result, all the responses from friends have been neutral or negative.
-I wear less clothing so I have to wash less. Other than that, not much has changed. being nude is not that much different from being cloathed...your still the same person, just a tad colder on a winter day. you act (should act) the same to everyone clothed or not. Being nude does make you more conftrable with who you are on the outside and I guess that would be the biggest change for me but I already wasn't too concerned about body image.
-Lets see if I can find a good way to describe how media thinks of nudity...hmmm....SEX PORN MONEY SEX PORN MONEY. You don't see much social nudity in the media I am afraid. if you see nudity, its mainly sex advertisement or the porn industry. I guess I should be thankful for the porn industry, they are one of the reasons internet took off...even if not the right reasons. Media is part of the reason why its so hard to be nude, because they have helped to give the impression that nudity is only for sex. Look at my answer on negative consequences.
-No, I am a at home nudist. I am at college and while the college is liberal, I would rather not press my luck. I work with a lot of kids life-guarding or teaching swim-lessons and if you get in trouble for being nude, you tend to get put onto a sex offender registry. When I am Iowa, I skinny dip or go on walks, but in Iowa, even skinny dipping on your own property is illegal. I wish to do more out in the open but right now I can't. I would like to go to a nude beach sometime so I can hang out with others who are also "free", but without a car, its a very very long 100+ mile bike ride.
-Oh there are negative consequences of course. One is that its illegal and it makes people uncomfortable. Another is that the porn industry actually DISCOURAGES social nudity because nudity actually makes us less interested in the sex which stems from nudity. If we start hanging out in the nude alot, then they will lose their industry and thats bad for them. But think of the bright sides of nudity, we no long judge based on appearance, we get more vitamin D from the sun, we don't need to wash clothing as much, we feel closer to nature (read http://www.nudist-resorts.org/talk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2527), and there are others I can't think of.

Thank you that actually helps alot. From what I understand its pretty hard to stay a nudist by yourself since most people are uncomfortable. I hope you keep on doing what you enjoy even if most of your friends and family dont know or feel a little uncomfortable.
Yes I am going to post the final essay. The first one is due in the next few weeks and the final big one in the next couple of months I hope to keep this topic open and alive as more information and views would be very helpful.

I grew up in a family where clothing was optional. We didn't really think of ourselves as nudists, but rather wore clothes according to the situation. Around home, we seldom dressed up. Summer holidays were pretty much clothes-free too, either camping or at resorts. It was only during college that I became more aware of a "nudist movement" since I was in California and in order to go to the beach "normally" I had to seek out a "free beach" due to American laws. As I began work and travelled more around the world, I became hyper-aware of how clothing was used in various countries for social control, especially with regard to gender.
-How would someone find out and join a nudist colony? are there any events that take place?
Of course "nudist colony" is a bit archaic as a term, but there are many groups, clubs and resorts. There is an International Naturist Federation that is an umbrella group for national associations such as the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR.org) or British Naturism (british-naturism.org), which in turn coordinate local groups. Nearly all have websites with information and events so it is easy to join a group and get involved in local activities.
-What was the reaction of your family and friends when they found out about your decision?
In-laws have initially had various reactions, but when they realize it is just part of the flow of things they just relax with it. Friends and colleagues have had widely different responses, depending on their upbringing, but with a little humour and if one is just non-defensive and natural, non-naturists are at first curious and then usually settle into a routine. Besides, it is just one part of one's wardrobe -- they know I dress for work and concerts, just not in the shower or at the beach.
-How did your lifestyle change after you became a nudist? Since then what are you feelings on non-nudist people?
Naturists just don't need clothes as a crutch for personal modesty or interpersonal respect. Naturism is a great way to relax and interact with others without worrying about status or pretense. It informs our relationships with others, but we also understand and respect non-nudist attitudes, except when they aggressively try to impose their own dress-code ideologies.
-How do you feel about the way nudism is displayed in the media? I know that MTV and other such channels do no justice to the true meaning of nudism.
Nudity in western countries tends to be all mixed up with sexuality, and the media amplifies extreme attitudes. In other countries, nudity is of course sometimes mixed up with attitudes toward poverty. The media can do a lot change attitudes, as exemplified by Clark Gable signaling that it was ok for men to be top-free in public.
-Do you live in a nudist colony or? and what type of nudist are you? as I know some nudist do it all the time compared to others as who only do it at home?
I suppose I am a "situational nudist" since I treat clothing just as a practical thing (eg. warmth or protection) but don't wear clothes when its more comfortable or practical. For instance, clothing, sand and water are not good companions.
-In your opinion are there any negative consequences of being a nudist? If not what are some positive things about being a nudist?
There are lots of humorous consequences of being nudist in places where it is not the norm, but only negative when social attitudes clash. There are lots of positive things about being naturist, not the least being free of all sorts of gender misconceptions and myths. Being able to be socially together with others, without feeling any more vulnerable for the lack of packaging, is really a blessing and a step above<

The thoughts had been around for several years but, due to a travel schedule at work, I was able to visit a couple of nude beaches

The first time I heard about nudism or naturism as an organized movement was when I was in high school. I had recieved a "Whole Earth Catalog" for Christmas and "The Naturist Society" was one of the advertisers.

go to the AANR and look for clubs. btw -- they are not called colony's by a practicing nudist

Family - not too happy, my wife thought it was a "sin". Sister - nothing said. Friends - a little jealous, not many friends know

Sleeping naked, more time naked around the house. The desire to socialize with other nudists. Feelings on non-nudists? Nothing different. I do believe that nudists have a healthier body image (look at the show "How to look good naked" to see how poor body images are.

True. As with nearly every other "fringe" activity, it gets lumped together with any activity that is done without clothes. For example... "??? streaked the mall, they must be a nudist". There is an immediate view that nudism = sex which is far from true.

I am a home nudist with the very occasional trip elsewhere. I have what is sometimes called a reluctant partner as my spouse refuses to join me.

Negative: As mentioned above, peoples first thought is that this is some sort of an effort at sexual gratification. From recent articles aound a politician in San Francisco, there are some repercussions.
Positive: Body Image -- Men tend to have a more forgiving image of their bodies anyway (we look like Bud Abbott but think we look like Brad Pitt, Women tend to work the other way -- they look like Jennifer Aniston but think they look like Rosanne Barr. While nudism doesn't fix this, it does tend to show us what "real people" look like and allow you to become more realistic.
I have also heard many nudists who are Christians who attribute becoming a nudist with reducing a desire or even a dependency with pornography.
-Would you want your children to become nudists or are your children nudists if you have any? How would you feel if they did not wish to join the movement?
I want my son to be able to make his own decision. I want him to not have a fear of nudity. I want him to not think nudity is inherently evil.
-Breifly explain your experience as a nudist. What would you say to someone who wants to join/become a nudist?
Beaches near San Diego, CA and Orlando, FL - these were my first social nudist experiences. I was alone most of these times and, while there were no issues, there are sometimes "stigma's" associated with that.
Hot Springs in Colorado - The first couple of times were just "skinny dipping", the last time was a hot spring that does have a clothing optional policy.
Saunas in Germany - What a way to relax. Not always naked (sometimes with a towel wrapped around me, depending on others in the sauna).

~I was vacationing at a resort in the Caribbean. The first two days were spent on the beach sitting in a soggy swimsuit and being chafed by sand. I signed up for a day boat trip and picnic at a beach on an island away from the resort. As we were leaving, I discovered that the excursion was to an island with a nude beach! I decided to go anyway, thinking no way was anybody getting me out of my suit. I stood firm, and in fact, was the last person to give in and shed my swimsuit - I was the last one to get dressed to return to the resort. Why hadn't someone told me about this sooner? I was hooked, and that was over 30 years ago.
-How did you hear about nudism? and how did you find out about it in your community? An acquaintance told me about a park about a half-hour from where I lived.
-How would someone find out and join a nudist colony? are there any events that take place?
The term colony is outdated. Nudists/naturists visit clubs, parks, resorts, and beaches. Nonlanded (those with no permanent facilities)clubs as well as landed clubs have events scheduled. Nonlanded clubs have events at members' homes, some have pools, hot tubs, volleyball, etc. The membership also visit landed clubs, some rent out facilities, and my club has clothed events as well.
-What was the reaction of your family and friends when they found out about your decision?
My sister became a nudist. My adult daughter said it was fine for me. My parents were deceased.
-How did your lifestyle change after you became a nudist? Since then what are you feelings on non-nudist people?
My feelings about non-nudist people aka textiles are the same as they've always been. They'd probably be happier if they learned to be more comfortable with themselves. I became somewhat of a nudist activist, appearing on a local TV show and regularly on radio. I often send out press releases from my club.
-How do you feel about the way nudism is displayed in the media? I know that MTV and other such channels do no justice to the true meaning of nudism.
Generally, the press releases by AANR focuses on the high-end resorts. This upsets me as the mom&pop nudist parks are sometimes forgotten as are the nonlanded clubs. It's not about all the glitz, it's about de-stressing, relaxing, and getting back to innocence.

I live in a home on 7 acres, 4 of which are woods. If the temperature permits, I am nude outdoors as well as inside. I am nude when possible, clothed when practical.

Positive things: I learned that I was not an ugly duckling. I became self-confident and not afraid to meet strangers with a smile.

I would love to have had children and had I had them, I would have raised them as nudists.

It's a great human equalizer. It feels the same as your feet do when they're bare, it's like going barefoot all-over. I would suggest a nudist club for them to contact and to definitely join one or all of the national nudist organizations.

Very easy now with the Internet, negative is that much is
pornographic. www.nudistparksusa.net is useful and gives
the web URL for the individual resorts. Haven’t seen any porn
on these sites. In-season my resort has group activities
every Saturday, including CO 5K Race, CO Triathlon, nude
Olympics, wine and cheese testing, volleyball tournaments,
Cookouts, dances, parties, happy hours and much else.

-What role do you think religion plays in nudism either for or against?
-How has nudism changed since the early 1930's?
-Where do you think the "nudist movement" is headed? In the next 5, 20 years?
-How do political elections affect nudism?
-Do you feel it is harder to be a nudist now than in the past and is it harder to become one in America rather than in Europe where it is more relaxed?
I just came up with some of these questions while reading other posts.

Being new to nudism, I am afraid I don't know much about what it was in the 30s. I would imagin taht things will keep getting better for us as time goes on. I don't think polititions are that intrested in the debate...one more thing they have to worry about dealing with. I deffently think its harder here in america than in europe. I don't think you could find anyone to argue differently

-How old were you when you first started to become a nudist? When I was in the Boy Scouts around age eleven, we would swim au natural in the woods and at the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). I fell in love with the
freedom of being unclothed then and I have practiced nudism ever since then but always in private or in very remote areas.
-What made you decide to join the nudist movement? I got tired of working so hard to find legal or remote places to enjoy my clothes free lifestyle.
-How did you hear about nudism? I have known about nudism since I was eleven.
-How did you find out about it in your community? That is another reason I am joining various nudist and naturist organization. I am looking for advice on nudist venues in the Sonoma County area of California.
-How would someone find out and join a nudist colony? You are in one ;location now. There are many other sites you can go to for additional information. Some are exploitive ( commercial) but even these can be helpful since most of the owners are really interested in promoting the virtues of nudism/naturism.
-Are there any events that take place? Look at the events section here.
-What was the reaction of your family and friends when they found out about your decision? Incredulity
-How did your lifestyle change after you became a nudist? Since then what are you feelings on non-nudist people? No big change other than using a towel around my waist to answer the door and selecting a place to live where I can get to a naturist facility easily, preferably my own back yard. I like most non nudists so long as they are not trying to take away my freedoms.
-How do you feel about the way nudism is displayed in the media? I know that MTV and other such channels do no justice to the true meaning of nudism. The media hasn’t got a clue about nudism or naturism. They are mostly locked into a childish view about most things in the world. But then consider, most media outlets dumb down their content to about the level of a fifth grader. That is one of the ways we got Bush elected :)

I wish I could find an affordable naturist/nudist housing area. I practice nudism as much as possible at home and when I travel to various resorts or campgrounds.

The negative consequences are the lack of availability of places where one can practice nudism/naturism in complete freedom. The positive consequences are an improved immune system (natural vitamin D) and a positive outlook on life in general. There is also the benefit of accepting others just as God made them and having yourself accepted in that manner as well.
-Would you want your children to become nudists or are your children nudists if you have any? How would you feel if they did not wish to join the movement? My children have always known that I will accept them as they choose to live. If they choose to not practice nudism/naturism, that is their choice and I will love them just as much.
-Briefly explain your experience as a nudist. What would you say to someone who wants to join/become a nudist? My experiences are all positive. I would advise anyone considering this life to just go for it. If possible find a clean resort where you can enjoy nude bathing/swimming and lots of warm sun. I have no doubt that if most people tried it they would love it.
-Do you think there are any psychological effects on children or adults? If any. Yes there are definitely psychological effects on children and adults. Children learn to accept their bodies as being nature’s gift to them and they learn to accept others in the same fashion. You will find very few negatively judgmental folk who practice naturism in a spirit<
