well thanks Helen for your support
most of the women on my island would be like you ... they would simply smile at the sight of a male erection.... because the people here are very sexual in their thinking (I guess that is how I come to be like this... I was born into the culture).
people everywhere dont appreciate unwelcome advances... but our local women know how to handle our men on this..
its the tourist women who have complained about harassment from beach boys... and there is always some case before the courts over it... some are genuine and some are mis-interpreted.
we would not be considered as "civilised" or "cultured" a people as you all.
our music and dancing is sexual in nature.. and male erections are regularly visible "concealed" by clothing... maybe the sight of it in tight clothes only adds to the excitement ?
People come from all over the world to our island looking for a sex holiday... which is why some of these court cases are treated with skepticism by the judges.
Now you understand why I have such freedom with my nudism.... and why the authorities dont usually interfere in these matters.

Wow! It must be great living where you are and enjoying total freedom to do what you feel.
Nude guys don't seem to scare me because they're just not the rapist type, whereas I was groped once by a fully clothed guy in Cap D'Agde. I was nude but was hurrying down to the beach with my camera to take some pics of the dawn and was not looking or acting sexual in any way. That's what annoyed me the most; if I had been 'coming on' to this guy then I would only have had myself to blame!
I hope my comments help other women to feel more confident around nude men.
Do you by any chance think that men pick up on fear/apprehension that a woman has and that this fear can make a guy feel more predatory? If he can see the woman isn't bothered or threatened by his appearance/sexuality is he likely to be more respectful towards her? I find it fascinating that naturism means so many different things to people. For me it means freedom and connecting with your true self. xxx Helen. (don't do anything I wouldn't do lol!)
Helen Naturist since 1992 and still loving it!

I came across this thread while searching for info on "unwanted erections" and there is very little info out there.
Maybe someone can help me out here.
Recently I have noticed that I get erect (not fully but like over half way there) when I am naked and nervous.
For instance, I recently started going to a gym and I use the sauna and communal showers. Occassionally I start getting hard... obviously this makes me nervous and this usually makes it worse. I am very much straight and it is not an issue of me seeing attractive guys, in fact it can happen with few if any people around.
The odd thing is that I am thirty and this was never a problem in the past. When I was younger I used communal showers (in the military) and never had a problem.
I have been skinny dipping with friends in the past and Im not a shy person by nature. I have gotten slight erections while skinny dipping with attractive women... I would consider that normal as there was an obvious cause for my reaction.
The thing that worries me is when I get them for no apparent reason or as a result of nervousness/excitement.
This really became a big issue for me when I was photographed for a tattoo piece that I am getting (like a small scale Samoan Pe'a ) in order for the artist to draw out the piece I needed to be nude. I started getting hard almost immediately after i dropped my pants... it wasnt sexual (the photographer was female though).
I was staring off into spce doing my best to not think about it... physically I was very uncomfortable as the room was cold and my knee was shaking uncontrolably. I was shocked at one point when I caught glimpse of myself in the mirror, I was close to fully erect.
The artist was very nice and professional though and essentially ignored it, I felt so horrible but didnt know what to say (it really was like having a nightmare about gonig to school in your underwear).
I figure I will eventually get over it (at least in the tattoo studio) as I will be naked and under the needle soon, but Im still terrified I will do it again.
I have read alot about nervousness making erections impossible is it possible for the opposite to happen? Is there anyway to over come other than acclimation?
I guess this wouldnt be a huge issue but I really want to be able to go to nude beaches and enjoy myself (I like being naked, I prefer to be solo though for the above reasons).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Your situation is perfectly normal.. it may be a little unusual.... but it is still normal.
You should be thankful the reverse situation is not happening... there are quite a few men who want erections and cannot get them.
The best advice that anyone can give you (or them) is to LET GO of the whole issue.
I doubt you are going to gain victory until you reach a state of mind in which you just dont care one way or the other.
I have personally experienced both conditions in my life... (getting an unwanted erection as well as failing to get a wanted one)... and putting too much emphasis on this is the worst thing that anyone can do.
A happy and unstressed mind.... when combined with good exercise, nutrition and rest... keeps one performing like a porn-star well into old age.
Do not let the nudists' rules stress you out... do not let your own anxiety stress you out..
Ged rid of all shame and embarrassment... there is no need for that.
I hope you can follow my advice... because if you can... it will guarantee your success as surely as day follows night.

I think that a woman's fear or lack of it only becomes relevant when she is approached by an assailant.
... for all other normal guys and situations... it doesnt really matter, so why be fearful ?
predators expect their victims to react with fear.. because they are accustomed to this response from them...
a victim who shows no fear has a very good prospect of taking out their assailant.
I am into martial arts (Shaolin Dragons) and I have learned that regardless of the magnitude of the threat ... or of ones capacity to counter it... FEAR is a negative emotion that impairs ones ability to function.... and there are ways to overcome your fears... but I would be going further off-topic.

hormiga, i sometimes get erect when getting a complete physical. Used to worry about it but I don't anymore. Back when I was 17 (I'm 46 now), a doctor pulled down my underpants and did the hernia check with no explanation of what he was doing. I was immediately erect and traumatized for years to come.
I'm kind of curious why you would be nude for a tattoo. Is the tattoo on your penis?

29 pages devoted to erections / arousal on a naturist site seems to indicate a rather unhealthy interest in such topics. Surely we have, most of us, reached a state of mental maturity once into social nudity, that makes such obsessions seem a tad shallow.

Based on the original poster's conclusion about the subject it seems that this is a charged question and one which most men worry about when nude with other naked people. Erections occur, even when sleeping, almost always while sleeping. It is a natural part of the male anatomy and soft or hard it is still the same penis. If while sunning around the pool at a nudist retreat you fall asleep and end up with an erection. What then? It is reminiscent to me of a man riding an elevator with an unlite cigar, a passenger tells him he can't smoke in there and he points out that she has tennis shoes on so is she planning on running around the elevator?
Creating tension over whether one should cover an erection or even have them while nude seems to run counter to the whole nudist philosophy of freeing oneself to enjoy the world without the layers of clothes or ingrained rules about how one should be.

Nudist philosophy is about accepting people for who they are and not showing off their body parts. It's the clothes that we're freed from not civility and ettiquette. Cheri

Wow, 19 pages. I just gotta pipe in! Especially since it made the home page.
You know, an erection can mean a lot of things, as one of the first posters mentioned. It doesn't always mean you're turned on or sexually interested. I get erections when I get sleepy and start yawning a lot. Yep, I'm weird, who isn't?
I took a physical anthropology course in my college days and the professor taught us something very interesting. Primates have a common body language. So whether you are a howler monkey in Costa Rica or a Japanese macacque or an African bonobo, or a Homo sapiens, there are certain "words" we all understand. Direct eye contact, for example is an act of aggression, connoting a refusal to submit. In the democratic society of the US, this is taken in a positive way. In autocratic societies, such as Latin America, it is not tolerated. Similarly, male primates flash their erections as a sign of aggression and dominance. This is probably why we usually respond very negatively to it. Many apes and monkeys will actually defensively masturbate when threatened to ward off their attacker. And primates, like canines, commit rape (both male and female) to subdue and exert their dominance over fellow simians.
Having said that, however, I do find it ironic that we men 'should' re-clothe when our nature rises. I do not walk around if I'm erect -- it's not comfortable, to perfectly honest -- but nor do I act act like something terrible just happened. Sexuality is normal and I refuse to apologize for my normalness. I feel sorry for the neo-Victorians who think I 'should'. The whole point of nudism, I think, is self acceptance. I've gotten over the self consciousness about being naked, I've gotten past the self-flagellation for burping and farting, and I've moved beyond worrying about a boner. And you know what? Not worrying about it usually makes it go away. (Massai, this might just be your problem.)
Finally, Mother Jones had an article on nudism and nudity and the writer wrote that what she got out of it was that we are truly all diverse and imperfectly perfect. There is nothing wrong with being a little skinny or a little overweight. She found that her tolerance and openness toward other people were enhanced by seeing her fellow human entirely and without the artifice of clothing. I think that is far more noble, beautiful and worthy of pursuing than some trite medieval notion of innocence and (sexual) purity.

So in summation, if you do get an erection at a nude beach is the correct thing to do enter the water or cover up with a towel temporarily? I just need to know for sure b/c I'm a new nudist and am going to be traveling to my first nudist site very soon. I'm afraid that an erection or ten is going to be inevitable for me, and I don't want to get kicked out or laughed at or embarrassed. Thanks to one and all, and I would love to hear the opinions.

Saxman, I felt exactly the same way before my first public nude experience. Believe me it's very unlikely and it ought to be the last thing you think of. Just enjoy the air and sun on your skin. It's wonderful. I'm hooked!

you said that random erections happen to your brother often and no one cares includign himself at that age one of my worries is size of my developing penis as a new nudist an erection revealing a small penis at the beginning of puberty was embarassing does he feel any shame liek that or any advice
all i can say is to be comfortable through practice as i have been and penis size is nto an issue in the non sexual environment you lear
