Walking nude down the street here in Vermont IS legal. Incredible, isn't it?
Vermont has no anti-nudity laws. The ONLY stipulation is that if someone calls the police with a complain and the police ask you to get dressed then you must get dressed or get arrested. However, if no one complains....you're free to walk naked down the street and the police cannnot legally do anything.
Does anyone know if there are any other states with such freedom?

Vermont, here I come! New York has made being topless legal for both men and women.

Isnt it funny how places that are normally cold all the time have little if no nudity laws? Like Denmark, Vermont, etc :)
Ok, so lets all move to Vermont! (Its closer then Denmark for most of us)

Melissa in BC a woman can legally go top free anywhere a man can, but we still get challenged by the authorities, so it is not really worth the hassel. There are several legal clothing optional beaches in the area, so it is safer to go nude there.

Actually, Denmark not only has nudity laws, they are part of the constitution, but unlike most US laws, they guarantee the right to be naked in public!
I guess the constitutional guarantees in a country depend on when it was founded, and what were the big issues at the time. The nearest thing Britain has to a Bill of Rights is the Magna Carta (dating back to 1066), which primarily guarantees property rights against seizure by the Crown - Britain doesn't have a constitution separate from the rest of the body of law, so most rights are in the form of laws, or more recently in the European Treaty of Human Rights.
The USA is probably unique in its constitutional right for the people to bear arms (I doubt that will be in the new Iraqi constition - that's what Saddam got in trouble for!), but not the right to bare bodies.
The USA is also probably the only major democracy not to guarantee equal rights for men and women, even though the Equal Rights Amendment has spent the last eighty (!) years getting so far only 35 of the 38 states to ratify it.
Cheers!

Well, we've discussed the prospect of a nude city over in the Nude Ambition topic. Let's go for a naked state! (We already have a growing list of prospective residents here!)
Of course, any nude resorts in Vermont would go out of business, having lost their market. But I somehow suspect they wouldn't mind too much.

With all the warm weather, unfortunately it seems that the Bible-belt areas of the South have enough laws against nudity and top-freedom to choke a horse (hey that could be a pun for the male arousal thread! )
Can't imagine that area of the country legalizing anything to do with nudity. At least not in my lifetime.

Vermont, how often do people actually take advantage of the freedoms there and walk around nude in public? I would love to head up there and try things out.
Did I just make another bad pun?

i think the vermont way is cool for this part of the world. nothing prohibits nudity. so if there is no hassle, then dont arouse those who would pass laws against.

Also I'm told that carrying a firearm without a permit is legal in Vermont. That might present a problem for a nudist. Where does one hide the darn thing?
Maybe I'm better off NOT using my imagination!

Absolutely right, calmnude. That's why I'm wondering if some people really do walk around nude. Assuming it's done tastefully with that hey-this-is-no-big-deal attitude, I would hope no one would mind. But if you never see anyone nude because of fear that someone will pass a law against it, maybe seeing more of it would get people used to the idea. Otherwise a law might get passed with the attitude that nudity was not favored by the people anyway.
By the way, I've heard a lot about the people of Vermont and how they protect their freedoms. My kind of people!

David;
1066 was when William the Conquerer invaded England. The Magna Carter was signed by King John at Runnymede in 1215 under considerable duress. Just a little history trivia.
Nudeguy your probably right. If someone did walk around nude in public they would probably arrest them for disturbing the peace if there was a complaint, or if it was happening a lot, pass a law against it.

Kim and nudeguy, of that I have no doubt. Just as soon as somebody tries it, the lawmakers would be all over it. The thread about funny and obsolete laws is filled with laws that nobody abolished, because it's a waste of time and money to do so, when nobody violates them.

Norway is an other country without any law against nudity. I think all the Scandinavia is the same in that way. I live there and am happy.... :-)

Baremeg,
Welcome to the forum. And I love Scandinavia for it's beauty and of course it's more open and understanding society.
